A worrying new development in the battle against drug abuse is being reported in China where prostitutes are being made to take drugs at the same time as their clients so that both can experience the drug high euphoria together.

The trend is now so common that there is even a name for the new type of prostitute who is required to take drugs with her client, the Bing Me, which translates as "prostitute who takes meth".

According to Chinese Vice squad officer You Hsieh the trend originated with rich men who did not want to take the drugs on their own, and hired high-class escorts and paid them well to take it with them. But the trend spread when female drug addicts realised that they could actually get their drugs for free by prostituting themselves and some do not even take payment, as long as they are given drugs for spending time with male customers.

He said: "The belief is that methamphetamine boosts people's sexual urges as well as the euphoria felt during the act. As many prostitutes are only working in the trade to fuel a drug habit, it was simple for them to switch to being paid in drugs rather than cash. These then become the Bing Mei. Although there is little to back up this claim is widely being discussed on social media forums which is inspiring other people to try it out and as a result it is spreading. "

But social workers are warning that being put under pressure to take the drug with their clients had now also turned non-drug taking prostitutes into addicts.

One prostitute Wan Han told social workers that initially customers would pay her to take drugs with them, which turned her into a drug addict and eventually she would just take the drugs without receiving pay.
